With the inventory done, I decided to work on a quick gaming board. I have made boards before but it has been some years and I have been wanting to customize a board using some thrift items I have been collecting.
The first thing I needed to do was settle on a topography for the board which was not easy. I really wanted to recreate a historical battlefield, or at least a portion of one so I read up on some ancient battles in the Encyclopedia of Classic Warfare, 1457 BC to AD 1815. This is an excellent book with well illustrated quick but informative entries on many major battles of the past.
Being a square board I needed to roughly know what would need to be modeled in each section so I began by selecting some maps of some interesting battles and sectioning them off visually with coffee sticks:
This is what it looked liked from my bird’s eye view. Not very helpful but I may still use one of these.
